How Netflix price increases hurt subscriber growth
  • The video service blamed a recent $1 price increase for new customers, and offered a guarded outlook for this period.
  • Earlier the shares posted their biggest intraday drop since July 2012
  • Now so many people are watching TV over the Internet, it’s harder for Netflix to add customers in the US
  • Los Gatos, California-based Netflix had gained 22 percent this year
  • HBO said yesterday it will offer a streaming video service independent of pay-TV subscriptions next year.
Netflix tumbled the most in more than two years after saying a price increase had slowed subscriber growth, while coming competition from HBO gives the world’s largest subscription-streaming service a new challenge.

In my opinion I think the price increase will increase the demand to watch movies on other platforms like at cinemas, or on sky box offices. The content on Netflix is always out of date and never has the most recent season of a series online.

Facebook will now let you post anonymously

  • Android and desktop versions of Rooms will be released in the future
  • Every post you share, every friend you make, and every link you follow is tracked, recorded, and converted into data
  • The advert-free site claims it is getting 40,000 requests an hour from users wanting to sign up
  • A "room" is made up of photos and posts on a single topic chosen by the person who set it up.
  • "There is a good reason in a lot of situations why you don't want people to know who you are and it's not because of something sketchy. We want to give people flexibility because that's what they want."

Close up of a woman hand holding an iPad checking her Facebook page
Facebook has released a new app that lets people use its service anonymously. The social network unveiled 'Rooms' on Thursday, a standalone mobile app for iOS that lets users interact on Facebook without using their real names. The aim is for people to feel free to discuss sensitive issues, when normally they would not be comfortable doing so. A "room" is made up of photos and posts on a single topic chosen by the person who set it up. That person can then invite others to join the room, and all can post anonymously. Colours, icons and cover photos for the room can also be modified to suit the creator's tastes.

In my opinion I think that this new application that doesn't promote adverts on its website will be a success. Over the past years users have come to the conclusion not to trust facebook as they sell personal information to third parties purely for profitable reasons. Ever since twitter has evolved a considerable amount of users have reduced or completely deactivated their account due to privacy issues. Many paedophiles targeted young teens by pretending to be another person, using false identity to get closer to the target and then either kidnap or rape the user. This outrage happened frequently in mid 2010 when users started privatising their pictures and personal information from the public

Theory

Benefits to institutions
With more ugc people would send this into the a news organisation for e.g. the bbc and the bbc could then talk about the news that they got sent in and it may give them a competitive advantage over competitors as they would have first hand footage when sky news for e.g. wouldn't.

Benefits to audience
They now have the advantage as they can blog about their opinion as well as the usage of social media in which they can tweet or facebook about first hand footage and this may get coverage without use of the big broadcasting institutions.

Wider issues and debates
Social
There is now more use of social due to the fact you can tweet each other and find out the news from there on.

Historical
Broadcasting was the way everyone got the news at first, not anymore as you can go on the internet and get it from there or even on your phone there and then.

Economical
Online viewing of the news can be free, to get sky news on your tvs may cost you.

Political
It may be bad news for the government as the programmes they are funding may lose out on audiences as broadcasting may not be everyone's main source of news anymore

SHEP

1. What is a Gatekeeping?
A process through which information is filtered for dissemination, whether for publication, broadcasting, the Internet, or some other mode of communication.

2. What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?
3) List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations
  • Polls
  • Have your says
  • Blogs with comments enabled
  • Message boards
  • Chat Rooms
  • Question & Answer
Social Networking sites
  • MySpace
  • Facebook
  • You Tube
  • Twitter
4) What is one of the main differences between professionally shot footage and that taken first-hand (UGC)?

5) What is a gatekeeper?
Gatekeepers are the professional editors and producers who control what is and isn’t shown on the news live. Gatekeepers serve in various roles including academic admissions, financial advising, and news editing. An academic admissions officer might review students' qualifications based on criteria like test scores, race, social class, grades, family connections, and even athletic ability.

6) How has the role of a gatekeeper changed?
Traditionally if a citizen had a story to tell or a piece of news they would have had to go through these news organizations, however UGC and sites that encourage that such as Twitter and Facebook allow citizens and ordinary people with a story to be heard.

7) What is one of the primary concerns held by journalists over the rise of UGC?
Journalists fear their jobs as everyone is producing their content. They believe in the future there will be fewer trained staff in news organisations as the job is already being done for them.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/20/google-search-changes-piracy-rankings
Google says latest search changes will 'visibly affect' piracy site rankings
  • Google is preparing a new tweak to its search engine to ensure that some of the most ‘notorious’ piracy sites are less likely to appear
  • In August 2012 google first announced that we would downrank sites for which we received a large number of valid DMCA notices
  • 224 million DMCA requests for Google search results in 2013
  • BPI ordered the removal of The Pirate Bay in 2012, Kickass Torrents, H33T and Fenopy in February 2013, and another 21 sites in October 2013.
  • Google encouraged users to download pirate torrents rather then the legal way
Google is preparing a new tweak to its search engine to ensure that some of the most ‘notorious’ piracy sites are less likely to appear when people search for music, films and other copyrighted content.

Google says in a new report that it will downrank pirate sites in its search results.A previous promise to do this in 2012 has since proved controversial, with music and movie industry bodies regularly claiming Google did not follow through on that promise. This time round, Google says the results will be noticeable.

In my opinion i think Google is optimising their site purely for profitable reasons, if a user had search a movie or song Google's ranking would promote torrenting sites at the top because of advertising revenues from returning customers. This may have given Google an edge over other competitors like Bing or Ask.com and made Google every bodies personal preference for a internet search engine.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet-security/10547145/Were-your-details-leaked-in-the-Snapchat-hack.html
Were your details leaked in the Snapchat hack?

  • Posted on the website SnapchatDB.info
  • Gibson Security has developed a website called GS Lookup where people can enter their username and be told if their data was included in the security leak.
  • The hackers obtained the information by exploiting a vulnerability in Snapchat's Find Friends interface
  • Hackers - "Too reluctant at patching the exploit until they knew it was too late"

evan spiegel snapchatThe photo-sharing site Snapchat was hit by a cyber attack yesterday which reportedly exposed the usernames and phone numbers of 4.6 million users. The data was posted on a website called SnapchatDB.info, which has since been suspended. The hackers censored the last two digits of the phone numbers "in order to minimise spam and abuse", but offered to disclose the uncensored database "under certain circumstances". In a statement to tech news site TechCrunch, the hackers explained that their motivation behind the attack was to raise public awareness around the issue, and put public pressure on Snapchat to fix the exploit.

I think that the recent hacking has made everybody question if our personal details are safe with these leading social networking sites. Following the Facebook security flaws and concerns people are increasingly worry about their privacy. Other major hacks recently was with games companies Raven, Microsoft, Activision, Sony.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/11158218/Apples-iPhone-based-Pay-launches-this-week.html
Apple's iPhone-based 'Pay' launches this week
  • It uses NFC chips which can communicate securely and wirelessly, and uses the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to authenticate purchases.
  • Apple announced the new Pay feature last month when it unveiled its new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets.
  • Retail chain Walgreen's says that it will adopt the service on October 18
  • Apple has teamed up with MasterCard and Visa to launch the service in the US.
Apple’s iPhone-based ‘Pay’ will launch this weekend and allow customers in the US to buy goods and services by tapping their new 6 and 6 Plus handsets against a payment terminal – but reports from inside Apple’s headquarters reveal that employees are already using it to buy lunch. A leaked internal memorandum to staff at retail chain Walgreens says that it will adopt the service on October 18. McDonalds, Macy’s and Staples are also known to have signed up to adopt Pay. Owners of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets will be able to use them to buy items from Walgreens, McDonalds and Staples in the US from this weekend, suggest reports - but Apple staff are already using it to buy lunch in their staff canteen.

Apple also uses sapphire glass in the protective cover over the iPhone's camera sensor. In my opinion I think that credit cards are less sophisticated than the UK which uses chip-and-PIN technology, experts predicted that gaining market share in Britain would be more difficult. Buying things will be much easier as there is no need to bring your card with you as card details are stored on the phone. A negative factor to this would be that theft percentages will increase dramatically.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11144451/Revenge-pornography-could-lead-to-14-years-in-jail-say-new-guidelines.html
'Revenge pornography' could lead to 14 years in jail, say new guidelines
  • Laws and child protection legislation which carry maximum sentences of between 10 and 14 years.
  • CPS spokesman said: “No one should have to suffer the hurt and humiliation of ‘revenge pornography’
  • There were 149 allegations of crimes involving revenge pornography during the last two-and-a-half years, according to the eight police forces in England and Wales with data on it.
  • Anti-harassment laws and rules governing malicious communications, all of which carry up to six months’ imprisonment and a fine of up to £5,000.
  • There were 149 cases over the last two and a half years.
Posting “revenge pornography” online could lead to a jail term of up to 14 years after prosecutors issued tough new guidelines in a bid to secure more convictions. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) signalled a significant change of tactics to address growing outrage about what it described as a “nasty and invasive crime”. There has been mounting pressure for a new law to combat “revenge porn”, which involves publishing intimate photographs or video, some of which may include graphic sexual activity, as retaliation against a former partner. Many offenders publish the images publicly on social media web sites such as Facebook or Twitter to humiliate partners after an acrimonious split.

The Crown Prosecution Service said posting online intimate pictures of a partner or former partner as a way of seeking retaliation was a crime that “can and will be prosecuted”.In my opinion I think that revenge pornography is a breach of a persons privacy rights and should not be allowed to happen. The fact that they are enforcing this greatly now will prevent the supposedly stop the famous celebrity Iggy Azelea's sex tape from being leaked. Recently apple had a hacking done to their iCloud servers

Buzzfeed

A listicle is a short-form of writing that uses a list as its thematic structure, but is fleshed out with sufficient copy to be published as an article. The listicle was about 29 facts about women in general,
  • Women speak about 20,000 words a day. That's 13,000 more than the average man is the opening slide.
  • The average amount of time a woman can keep a secret is 47 hours and 15 minutes.
In my opinion I think that listicle dumb down their audience and are catered towards people who have a short attention span. People that like reading quick stuff to entertain themselves and learn cool facts is better than reading a massive article which tends to bore lots of people. They change the way people consume media, the old traditional method of using newspaper to educate yourself about news is the past. Everything has turned digital and are less informative.

Microsoft gets $1bn in Android royalties from Samsung
    Samsung Galaxy Note 4
  • Samsung paid Microsoft about $1bn (£626m) last year to use its technology in gadgets running Google's Android
  • Licensing agreement generated $1bn
  • Microsoft said it had launched the court action to recover about $7m
  • A renegotiated license agreement is proposed to happen
  • Google's Android is now the world's most popular mobile operating system
The figure is revealed in court documents Microsoft has filed to help legal action taken against Samsung. The case revolves around the licensing agreement that generated the $1bn payment. Samsung made one payment late and has now stopped paying altogether, claiming Microsoft's 2013 acquisition of Nokia had invalidated the agreement. Microsoft has rebuffed this claim, saying the licensing agreement contains "explicit provisions" that allow it to buy other companies and still get cash from Samsung. Legal action over the deal was begun in August 2014 after Samsung was late to make a payment. At the time, Microsoft said it had launched the court action to recover about $7m it had lost in interest payments as a result of the cash arriving late.

I think many users will migrate from apples iPhone in a years time, many people aren't seeing any differences to make them continue with their product each year. On top of the the celebrity nudes leaks have had an impact on iPhones sales and the bending problem. But yet news articles are suggesting the newest phone is the most selling out of all their phones.

Celebrity victims of naked photo hack join together to sue Google $100M 'for capitalizing on scandal rather than fixing it'
  • Anonymous users on 4chan claim photos were stolen from the company's iCloud app
  • Lawyers for some of the women involved in the widespread email hack claim Google could have helped stop the images circulated
  • The reality star filed a lawsuit against the tape's distributors, Vivid Enetrtainment, which was finalled dropped when she settled for $5 million.
  • Invasion of privacy
  • Google being sued for $100M
A large group of the women whose personal email accounts have been compromised - with the stolen intimate shots of stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian subsequently disseminated online - are now threatening to sue Google for $100 million, according to a new report. Marty Singer has written a letter to Google about this issue and the statement goes as follows: 'Because the victims are celebrities with valuable publicity rights you do nothing - nothing but collect millions of dollars in advertising revenue - as you seek to capitalize on this scandal rather than quash it,'.

Reality star: Nude pictures allegedly showing TV personality Kim Kardashian (pictured) have been leaked onlineHackers supposedly uploaded images of famous stars like Kim Kardashian and Vanessa Hudgens to 4chan and Reddit, but the latter quickly removed them due to its stringent policy on hacked photographs being shared on the site. I think that itself its not entirety the hackers fault, celebrities are already prime targets for hacking and storing nude pictures of themselves on their phone and cloud storage is a stupid move. Celebrities should take into account that technology is evolving everyday and hackers are become more intelligent at breaching security firewalls and gateways. Just last week the hacking crew Lizard Squad hacked into many big companies like Sony, Apple, Microsoft and the US military by overloading and hacking into the servers via DDOS attacks.
