Section 1: Necessarily to a pair of notables who have it in their power to save high-end journalism
Section 2:
1) Do you agree with James Murdoch that the BBC should not be allowed to provide free news online?
No I think that news should be free and his paywall scheme is ridiculous, why would someone pay for news when they can use the ad free BBC that is multi platform across TV and E-Media. Rupert and James only say that they newspaper needs to change is because the print is a dying platform due to the advancement of technology. The BBC as an PSB need to provide a sufficient amount of news for TV licence payer to consume

2) Was Rupert Murdoch right to put his news content (The Times, The Sun) behind a paywall?

Gultang and Ruge
Immediacy has changed greatly as new digital media gives the audience with more up to date recent news than ever. Rather than previously having to wait till the next day for the news to be published on the newspapers or later on in the day during

Familiarity has changed as more news that is even closer to us within Britain is published due to the ability of publishing unlimited amount of news online.

Frequency has been affected as events that occur instantly, can quickly be reported on and published online; they can also trend on social network sites.

Unambiguity has been affected by individuals as they have their own opinions and share them on social media sites.

Predictability has been affected by new and digital technology as consumers of social media that express their views could predict certain things like if there would be a war, as political decisions may be obvious to them as on the news they could be hearing certain issues going on.

Continuity: The continuity of news has developed the growth of this as the news stories may appear consistently

Elite nations and people: The growth of new and digital media has developed a growth in the curiosity of elite nations

Negativity is less important nowadays as all news is made on the internet. However for newspapers negativity is more important as shocking/bad news would generate more sales for newspapers.

Balance isn’t as important as new/digital media provides the ability for all news stories to be presented locally, as well as globally

Will YouTube's Subscription Music Service Be Profitable?
  • EMarketer estimates that YouTube alone will generate more than $7.2 billion in ad revenues this year.
  • Google is hoping that users will pay a promotional lifetime price of $7.99 per month or a standard monthly price of $9.99 for a Music Key subscription.
  • The launch of Music Key comes after Apple's iTunes model
  • Google keeps 30 percent of that revenue after paying royalties and licensing
  • Approximately $133 million to $436 million would be left for Google each year
This week, Google is continuing its expansion by attempting to penetrate the subscription music market. Music Key is only one part of Google’s music push.Free users will now see tabs for an artist’s discography on Android, iOS and the web. The new tabs will allow users to easily locate and play full albums on Youtube for the first time. The new tab will also make personalized recommendations and provide links to trending music.

I think that music streaming is increasing becoming very popular with consumers as it doesn't take up memory on their device allow them to listen to a much larger library compared to it being on their phone or tablet. At launch many people will not sign up to this service as Spofiy, Pandora and Deezer currently control the streaming sector and will have to wait till alot of users memebrship to run out before they see a huge spike in signing up numbers.

Now e-cigarettes can give you malware

  • Any electrical device that uses a USB charger could be targeted in this way
  • Made in China e-cigarette had malware hardcoded into the charger
  • USB controller chips, including those in thumb drives, have no protection from such reprogramming
  • Stick to buying from respected e-cig brand, back up the content on the computer and ensure that the computer is protected.

E-cigarettes may be better for your health than normal ones, but spare a thought for your poor computer – electronic cigarettes have become the latest vector for malicious software, according to online reports. Many e-cigarettes can be charged over USB, either with a special cable, or by plugging the cigarette itself directly into a USB port.
An e-cigarette charges from the wall.
I think that USB ports plugged into a wall socket or the port on a computer may become to primary way of the intrusion but, if so, that means that a cheap e-cigarette from an untrustworthy supplier gains physical access to a device.

ITV under pressure to axe Dapper Laughs show over misogyny claims

  • More than 45,000 people have signed a petition
  • The last episode of the current series of the show aired on 7 November and drew an average audience of 119,000
  • Ofcom said it had received 37 complaints about the show from viewers
  • Sexual harassment and borderline threatening behaviour towards women

More than 45,000 people have signed a petition calling on ITV chief executive Adam Crozier to axe the controversial comedy show Dapper Laughs: On The Pull. The comedian Daniel O’Reilly, who gives laddish advice on how to “pull birds” under the guise of a deliberately provocative character in the ITV2 series, has proved controversial for lines such as “Just show her your penis. If she cries, she’s just playing hard to get” and “If she’s looking at me and playing with her hair, by the end of the night she’ll need a wheelchair”.

Comedian Daniel O’Reilly as his alter ego Dapper LaughsIn my opinion the petition carried out on ITVs show Dapper Laughs has changed the perception on how men treat women. Recently his show has been trigger alot of men to act inappropriately in clubs and women didn't seem to be bother before but all of a sudden just because a petition was made women have turned hypocritical and gone against dapper laughs.

Google to test-fly balloons which transmit internet over Australia
  • Telstra to fly 20 balloons over western Queensland
  • Google is trying to work out a way to give affordable internet access to the 4.8 billion people who cannot get online
  • Estimated to bring two-thirds of people who are presently unwired.
  • The company’s ultimate goal is to have a ring of balloons circling the Earth
Google's Project Loon has so far test-flown internet balloons over New Zealand
Google is bringing its audacious internet-transmitting balloons to Australia. The company will test-fly 20 balloons in western Queensland in December in partnership with Telstra. It’s the latest step in Project Loon, Google’s plan to beam internet to remote parts of the world via helium balloons that circle the globe on stratospheric winds. The balloons carry antennas that can beam 4G-like signals to homes and phones 20km below.

In my opinion I think that Googles project loon helping third world countries gain access to internet will help

Phone and web data plan under fire for interfering with privacy
http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2014/nov/14/phone-and-web-data-plan-under-fire-for-interfering-with-privacy

  • The federal government’s plans to retain phone and web data for two years
  • The committee’s findings are particularly significant because it has four Labor members, three Liberal members, two Nationals members and one Greens member.
  • 500,000 disclosures made by telecommunications companies
  • Australia’s law enforcement agencies are already filing 500,000 requests a year for warrantless access to metadata
  • The AFP has refused to confirm or deny the existence of any documents relating to these requests
  • Requiring government agencies to gain a warrant for accessing telecommunications from either a court or independent authority before access.

MetadataThe federal government’s plans to retain phone and web data for two years will unreasonably interfere with privacy and could having a “chilling effect” on journalists, a bipartisan parliamentary human rights committee has found. The federal parliament’s human rights committee has highlighted a series of human rights concerns with the bill and recommended that access to telecommunications data should be subject to a warrant system, to avoid “arbitrary interferences” in Australians’ private lives.

In my opinion I think human rights committee finds the plan to retain data for two years could have a ‘chilling effect’ on journalists. The government has had previously got knowledge of  bipartisan support with the Labor party for their first two packages of national security legislation. The data retention bill has been referred to the joint parliamentary committee on intelligence and security, but it is not clear whether there will be hearings before the parliamentary sitting year ends.

Twitter's debt assigned 'junk' status
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30048344
  • News of the rating sent New York listed Twitter shares tumbling nearly 6%.
  • Twitter reported a disappointing 7% fall in timeline views per user
  • Fourth-quarter revenue might fall short of market expectations of $448.8m
  • Twitter shares gave up most of the 7% gain made on Wednesday after the company announced it was considering creating additional mobile applications beyond its core messaging service and video app
US ratings agency Standard & Poor's has given the debt of social media giant Twitter the rating "junk". S&P said Twitter's $1.8bn (£1.1bn) September debt issue - IOUs sold to investors in return for interest - were worthy of a "speculative" rating of BB-, three notches below investment grade. News of the rating sent New York listed Twitter shares tumbling nearly 6%. The social network's push for acquisitions despite slow earnings growth was behind the low rating.
"The company is investing very aggressively in growth. Depending on the level of business reinvestment, Twitter may not generate positive discretionary cash flow until 2016," S&P said in a note.

In my opinion I think that Twitter is in decline. Just last weed they announced that it was opening an office in Hong Kong despite being banned from operating in mainland China to grow its advertising and sales reach. Strongly suggesting that financially they are not doing so well compared to their predecessors Facebook

Facebook sets up 'dark web' link to access network via Tor
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29879851

  • Facebook has created the ability for users to connect directly to the social network via anonymising "dark web" service Tor.
  • Users would still need to log-in, using real-name credentials, to access the site.
  • Accounts were being wrongly locked out.
  • Facebook, along with other major web companies, is currently pushing for permission to be more transparent over government requests it receives.
  • Can log into Facebook without giving Facebook your location

Woman holds laptop with thumbs-up 'like' logoFacebook has created the ability for users to connect directly to the social network via anonymising "dark web" service Tor. While it was already possible to access Facebook via Tor, the new set-up means all data is encrypted and Tor users are not mistaken for hacked accounts. Users could access the site "without losing the cryptographic protections" of Tor, Facebook said. It may appeal to people in places where the network is blocked. Facebook is the first Silicon Valley giant to provide official support for Tor, a network built to allow people to visit web pages without being tracked and to publish sites whose contents would not show up in search engines. Tor is a network that anonymises users. One of the key ways it does this is by routing internet traffic through several locations - making it hard to track down where the user is browsing from.

In my opinion this move form Facebook was good as we as consumers don't have to give our location of were we accessed the Internet or give them our browsing habits. We achieve nothing from it and Facebook are racking in loads of advertising money from details being sold to third party companies. Although this will increase the chances of suspicious activity like stalking people down, Facebook will not be able to cooperate with the police to track and find where the user logged in from as the location is covered using a proxy by the Tor client.
