Apple faces lawsuit over storage space on iPhones and iPads

  • Firm failed to tell consumers that iOS 8 software could take up as much as 23.1%
  • People who bought the law suit are seeking $5m (£3.3m) in damages and a trial by jury
  • The defendant fails to disclose to consumers that as much as 23.1% of the advertised storage capacity of the devices will be consumed by iOS 8
Apple Hosts Its Worldwide Developers Conference
Following complaints about the large amount of storage that Apple’s latest software iOS 8 takes up on its iPhones and iPads, the US tech firm is being sued for the alleged misrepresentation of the storage capacity of the devices. The suit is being brought on behalf of two Miami residents, Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara, who claim to have bought iPhones and iPads in the last year advertised with 16GB of storage but providing less to the user.

Many users are effected by this issues and has damaged apples public image. It is standard practice for consumer electronics manufacturers to advertise the total storage capacity of their devices without disclosing the amount taken up by the pre-loaded software.

PlayStation and Xbox facing issues after Christmas Day attack

  • PSN Service was disrupted for a total of 6 days but only 4 days for Xbox Live
  • DDOS - Disrupted Denial of Service sends packets of requests to the main server which then gets confused and crashes leaving users without the ability to access some features.
  • Lizard Squad accepted mega uploads offer for 300,000 encrypted vouchers
Sony PlayStation hackLizard Squad began on Wednesday by blasting Xbox Live offline with a DDoS attack that bombarded Microsoft’s servers with the digital equivalent of shrapnel until they ground to a halt. Then it did the same to Sony’s PlayStation Network.

I was personally effected by the actions lizard squad carried out but I do support the message they're trying to get across that big corporations don't invest money back into their services even though users have to subscribe to use the online features. Lizard Squad is known for DDOS attacks, a process that overloads the system until it shuts down. It has attacked several targets in the past including Twitch, EA Games, Destiny and World of Warcraft. This isn't the first cyber-attack that Sony had to face. Last month, Sony was attacked and it resulted to the dissemination of unreleased movies and celebrity personal information over the Internet.

North Korea responds with fury to US sanctions over Sony hack
  • US sanctioned 10 North Korean government officials and three organisations
  • The US has described the sanctions as only the first part of its response
  • It was the first time the US has imposed sanctions on another nation in direct retaliation for hacking an American company
  • The cyber-attack on Sony’s computers led to the distribution over the internet of information on employees and unreleased films, as well as embarrassing in-house emails
Obama and KimNorth Korea has furiously denounced the United States for imposing sanctions in retaliation for the Pyongyang regime’s alleged cyber-attack on Sony Pictures. North Korea’s foreign ministry reiterated that it did not have any role in the breach of tens of thousands of confidential Sony emails and business files and accused the US of “groundlessly” stirring up hostility towards Pyongyang. He said the new sanctions would not weaken the country’s 1.2 million-strong military.

I think that North Korea were behind the attacks as they previously praised the hacks on Sony as a 'righteous deed' and described The Interview a comedy about the assassination of the North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un as an 'act of war'. Although the FBI has officially declared North Korea responsible for the cyber attack on Sony Pictures, a number of private security specialists have expressed doubt that the country was involved.

Essay questions

The development of new/digital media means the audience is more powerful in terms of consumption and production. Discuss the arguments for and against this view.

The development of new/digital media has made the audience both more powerful in terms of consumption and production, in the current digital era new and digital media has revolutionised the world, along with the internet being “the most important medium of the twentieth century” (Briggs and Burke). This essay will be going over both sides of the argument.

A Marxist perspective would argue that the so-called “information revolution” has done little to benefit audiences or to subvert the established power structures in society. Far from being a “great leveller” (Krotoski, 2012) as many have claimed, it has merely helped to reinforce the status quo by promoting dominant ideologies. The most popular news website in the UK by a considerable margin is the ‘Mail Online’, which receives more than 8 million hits every month and is continuing to expand rapidly – with forecasts that it will make £100 million or more in digital revenues in the next three years. Similar to its tabloid print edition, the website takes a Conservative, right-wing perspective on key issues around gender, sexuality and race and audiences appear to passively accept what the Marxist theorist, Gramsci, called a hegemonic view. When one of their chief columnists, Jan Moir, wrote a homophobic article about the death of Stephen Gately in 2009 there were Twitter and Facebook protests but, ultimately, they did not change the editorial direction of the gatekeepers controlling the newspaper.

I strongly agree with this statement that new and digital media platforms have made media consumption far more powerful for the audiences. New media has had a profound effect on three of the most essential categories of society in the twenty-first century: economics politics, and the exchange of ideas. Of course, the scope of this article is limited in its ability to name the types of changes that are a product of new media, let alone a sufficient treatment of each category. However, it is important to sketch a brief schematic life of new media in the Information age.

From a Pluralist perspective the belief that new and digital media has created a new tactical and digital battleground against the elite or controlling class that was not possible with traditional media also highlighted by Briggs and Burke who state "the most important medium of the twentieth century ". A prime example of this is the digitally damaging and recurring hack by hackers anonymous which despite their political motives, the flaw in the manner the elite class assert their dominance, control and influence on society.

Marxism on the other hand believed in a capitalist society and class domination. By this they meant the elite and the wealthy conglomerates were to say at the top and provide all the media needed for the audiences and all the power audiences think they have is an illusion. This also links in with hegemony in that the higher social class has power over everyone else

Following the other pluralistic argument of new media empowerment would be that the internet provides us with an array of information almost instantly, with websites such as Wikipedia allowing us to be enriched my information on virtually every subject online. However this information is often unreliable due to users changing correct information to make false claims on somebody

On the other hand Marxists also believed in print and analog broadcast models to be dying media, such as those of television and radio. The last twenty-five years have seen the rapid transformation into media which are predicated upon the use of digital technologies, such as the Internet and video games. However, these examples are only a small representation of new media. The use of digital computers has transformed the remaining 'old' media, as suggested by the advent of digital television and online publications.

YouTubers ads for Oreo banned for not making clear purpose of videos

A campaign for Oreo featuring a host of British YouTube stars has been banned by the advertising watchdog for not clearly telling the public their videos were ads, following a complaint from a BBC journalist.
Mondelez, the parent company of Oreos, signed up a number of stars to promote its product in videos where they took part in an “Oreo Lick Race”.
The campaign featured some of the best-known British YouTubers including Phil Lester and Dan Howell, on the Amazing Phil channel which has 2.2 million subscribers, who were hired to present a Radio 1 show in 2012.

This article basically sums up how a journalist thought that there were a number of people who were trying to promote the Oreo brand were not seen clear by the attacking journalist. The journalist made a big deal about it how he thought that oreo had secretly asked people to promote their product through YouTube however all the youtube video makers had clearly stated that they were working with the oreo company in the description.I think that this article and issue has been slightly blown out of proportion as youtube can be an informal marketplace, and should not be taken so seriously by some officials.

French journalism school executive accused of plagiarism

The executive director of a journalism school has been suspended after being accused of plagiarism.

Agnès Chauveau apparently cut and pasted parts of articles that had appeared in a newspaper called Le Monde and other French publications for her columns published on the Huffington Post website.
Bruno Patino, director of the school at the respected Institute of Political Sciences, known as Sciences Po, wrote to students and staff on Monday saying the allegations could not be taken lightly. “Plagiarism is a serious matter in journalism,” he said in an email.
Plagiarism is wrong, and now this journalism school, is going to be under attack due to what a person who is very high up in the school has done. That is a school boy error that Students are not allowed to do let alone a executive director. This will now give a negative representation on this school causing less people to be interested in it for the right reasons.

UK set to be first country in which more than half of ad spend goes digital

  • The next closest countries likely to reach the milestone are Sweden (47% of total ad spend will be digital), Denmark (43%), Australia (42%) and Norway (40%).
  • More than 50% of £15.7bn advertiser spend will go on digital and online media in 2015 beating print, cinema, buses, billboards, TV and radio combined
  • Regional newspapers are expected to see a 9.1% fall in print ad revenues to £820m, a fall of £82m year-on-year.
  • National newspaper advertising is predicted to decline 8.3% to £908m next year, and £80m year-on-year fall.

Ad break van dammeThe UK is predicted to become the first country in the world where more than half of all advertising spend goes to digital media – thanks to a national obsession with gadgets, social media and online shopping. Next year more money will be spent on internet advertising than in traditional media such as newspapers, magazines, TV, cinema, radio, and billboards, posters and buses combined.
According to Group M paid search advertising will grow to £4.2bn, with about 29% of that on mobile devices, most of which is hoovered up by Google, which has more than 90% share of the UK market. The fastest-growing part of the internet market is display advertising, which is forecast to surge 20% next year to £2.7bn, with 39% of that mobile display advertising.

I think in my opinion putting up a paywall will reduce the income from
